‘‘.. . why new beings should be produced by the union of the two sexual elements, instead of by a process of parthenogenesis ... . The whole subject is as yet hidden in darkness.’’

Evolution of Mating Strategies Lab

Welcome to the Gresham Evolution of Mating Strategies (GEMS) Lab! We are dedicated to studying the evolution of mating strategies, focusing on the prevalence of sex in across the tree of life. Our research utilizes the C. elegans nematode system to investigate how the microbial environment selects for mating strategy. We also explore the general ecology, population parameters, and mating strategy of the mangrove rivulus fish (Kryptolebias marmoratus), one of only two vertebrates known to self-fertilize.
